The Grammy Nominated, Dove Award winning modern rock band from Southern California. Started around the early 80s and still recording today, The Choir now calls Nashville, TN their home. While semi-retired, The Choir puts out an independent cd every so often and might be tempted to play live under the right circumstances. Learn everything you need to know and details about all the albums available here

Let's Start with (Chase the kangaroo Album.Much of this album has a somber tone, coming as it did just after lyricist Steve Hindalong's wife suffered her 2nd miscarriage. In fact the booklet quotes Ecclesiastes 7:3 as its reason to be ("Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart") The guitar textures and feedback get thicker here as the band begins to resemble U2 somewhat sonically. The album's cover suggests at the faith grappling happening here, as the band finds God "blurry", difficult to fully grasp. As a bonus, this CD includes 5 tracks from the 1986 EP "Shades of Grey" tacked on at the end.Children of Time" looks at the facile arguments made to deny God's existence ("The cosmonauts were first in space/To look for God and find no trace") as well as the dangers in hedonism. ("When boys and girls love what they feel/They lick the Earth and swear it's real....") On the other hand, the band admits there's much in God's nature they don't understand. ("Clouds/are round about you/Shadows veil your eyes..") "Sad Face" delves further into this as they reflect on Hindalong's recent loss ("There's a woman in the kitchen/With a rainbow on her cheek/Isn't that a promise?/Still I never felt so weak..") "Cain" examines the guilt we all feel as sinners who affront God again and again ("I washed my robe in the river/I washed my hands in the rain/I washed my robe in the river/I curse the crime and I curse the stain") "Rifleman" calls Christians on their "Yeah! U. S. A.!" attitudes about armed conflict. While I'm not sure that war is ALWAYS avoidable, Christians do tend to get caught up in the patriotic fervor that accompanies it and forget that we're in trouble when we "pray for peace but revel in war". It cleverly tacks on a quick reprise of the similarly themed "Render Love" from their DIAMONDS AND RAIN disk. "So Far Away" is another great love song from Hindalong, his own "Beth". ("Shut the windows tight/Lock the door/I've seen that sky before/And I'm so far away/So far away, my love..."){Jerry Chamberlain and Sharon McCall are guest vocalists} "15 Doors" is a call for a more practical charity, embodying Jesus as a broken-down motorcyclist. In a twist, Hindalong imagines Jesus telling the listener one day they had "left me outside the door/shaking (in the cold) on your front porch!"

The Choir (drummer/lyricist Steve Hindalong, singer/guitarist Derald Daugherty, and bassist Tim Chandler, plus saxman "Buckeye" Dan Michaels) have been making great Christian music with an alternative slant since 1984. This one has a sound probably closer to pop (I first thought "All That is You" might be Michael W. Smith upon hearing it on a Sunday morning CCM radio show) than their usual, perhaps due to the influence of producer Charlie Peacock, but they still throw in curveballs like the wailing cavernous sax from Dan Michaels at the coda of "Black Cloud". The tone of the album is more celebratory than their usual melancholy take on faith as well. This album managed to place 2 songs on the CCM charts, "When the Morning Comes" (#7) and "Fear Only You" (#17). HIGHLIGHTS: "Render Love" is a more believable peace anthem than "Give Peace a Chance" (though later effort "Rifleman" was more effective.) "Black Cloud" hews closer to the somber Choir worldview of a God that's merciful but not to be trifled with. Hindalong "trembles" for unbelievers with "houses in the sand" with "fatal inclinations to savor mortal breath". "Listen to Her Eyes" is advice to the lovelorn ("If your love is more than words/listen to her eyes../Read her tears like pages/hold her when she cries..") set to a peppy backbeat. The kitschy child's vocal count-in to "Triangle" belies the serious subject matter as an outsider offers comfort for a girl whose father molests her when he's drunk. (The triangle is the path of dad's booze..'from the cooler to the chair to the garbage can' as the lyric goes) I've never found out if the "Bethia" it was inspired by is someone the band knew personally...or merely "knew of". "When the Morning Comes" may be one of the most gorgeous "can't wait to meet God" songs ever put to paper. Hindalong sees it as not only a time to rest, but to end his searching ("I'll understand/When the morning comes")LOWS: I can't honestly say there are any songs here I don't like. If PRESSED, I might name "Kingston Road" (a Charlie Peacock-penned tune) as being less worthy than the others here, but I couldn't call it "bad". BOTTOM LINE: Hindalong would go on to couch his sentiments in more veiled terms in the future. Much of this is nakedly emotional in a way he seldom allows himself to be. Some will judge that to be less "artistic", however this is much more than callous craft. These songs will dig themselves into your psyche. It's not my favourite Choir disk, but it IS indispensable. Recommended.

While less polished than their "Circle Slide" album, "Wide Eyed Wonder" is one of the Choir's best. It shows the breadth of their music expertise. From the melancholy "Spin You Around" to the warm and fuzzy "Wide Eyed Wonder" (about his daughter) to the whimsical "Car, Etc.", this album captures everything I love about the Choir. Moody, yet not depressing - inspiring, yet not preachy - and overall, very creative. Unique about this album are the highly original bass lines laid down by Robin (don't remember her last name), who later left the band, adding some spice particularly to "Robin Had a Dream" and "Spin You Around". Any true Choir fan needs this album!!

About Free Flying Soul.My first impressions weren't that good - too mellow for my liking. ‘Salamander’ kicks off the CD in an easy, laid back style and is a highlight after one or two listens. Standout tracks include ‘Away With The Swine’, ‘The Ocean’ and ‘If You're Listening’, which is a slow moody song with lyrics that soothe the soul. ‘I'd rather be forgiven than enlightened...grace is a gift more refined than magic dust/Mercy a quality more divine than trust.’ ‘Butterfly’ is another good track with shades of the Beatles perhaps? The Choir lyrics are as always deep and a mixture of blatant and subtle references to the Christian life and musically they are not afraid to experiment and try things out of the ordinary - the guitar beginning on ‘The Chicken’ was an extremely nice touch. I think The Choir fans will receive this offering with open arms and maybe they'll pick up some new ones too(http://www.holymetalrob.com/)
