BIOGRAPHY:
This major Christian-rock act, which began in the early '70s, were defined by the sibling harmonies of Annie Herring, Matthew Ward, and Nelly Greisen. Their music brought complex song structures to inspirational music. Their best-known song was 1974's "Easter Song," which achieved moderate mainstream radio airplay (and featured Michael Been, later founder of The Call, on bass). The group's self-deprecating attitudes may have kept them from achieving the renown of some contemporaries. Herring and Ward continued to record solo projects after the group disbanded in 1988.http://www.2ndchapterofacts.com/.2nd Chapter of Acts was a very popular Christian pop group- very good writing and performing of songs. And this live performance is great-there's lots of energy, and an especially moving performance by Annie Herring of a song entitled "Receive"-it still sends me when I hear it. Also great performances by Phil Keaggy-a fantastic guitarist, and others like him who went on to their own popularity, like Richard Souther. There's lots of good classic 70's-80's stuff here. About the Artist Comprised of Annie Herring, Nelly Greisen and Matthew Ward the sibling vocal trio known as 2nd Chapter of Acts was one of the Jesus movement¹s greatest treasures - the very rare example of a group with a completely unique sound and the native talent to outshine all secular competitors. Best know for their charismatic Easter Song its message of "Hear the bells ringing, their singing that we can be born again!" became an anthem of Jesus music. Annie was the primary songwriter but Nelly and Matthew made additional writing contributions. Characterized by amazing vocals, angelic harmonies, complex and interesting songwriting and passionate lyrical messages, the group left their mark on audiences all over the world in their 20 years of concert touring. Product Description This album represents the merging together of three musical parts of the Lord's ministering body; The 2nd Chapter of Acts, Phil Keaggy, and "A Band Called David." During the summer of 1977 the Lord used the combined gifts of these ministries to help unite His body in eighteen cities in the Western U.S.Walter and Elizabeth Ward had nine children as they scratched a living from the black earth of North Dakota in the '40s and '50s. Though poor, the Wards were rich in love, fun, and music, and Annie Ward and her older sisters began singing publicly when she was five years old. They performed at school openings, country church picnics, and farm co-op meetings, but it was the Catholic Church that made the biggest impact on Annie's musical development. "I loved the church," says Annie. "I loved to sing in the choir and to sing those Latin masses. It filled me with a tremendous sense of awe."But something was wrong with Elizabeth. Dizziness, slurred speech, and the occasional seizure signaled trouble ahead. After being misdiagnosed for more than a decade, their mother, Elizabeth, died from a brain tumor in 1968. Her death had a particularly significant effect on Annie, who was investigating the religions of the world, trying to find the reason for her own existence, when the transitory fact of life was brought squarely home by her mother's passing. A few months later, Annie's boyfriend, Buck Herring, became born again and shared the truth of salvation with her, telling her that Jesus offered her forgiveness through His blood, and new birth through His resurrection. He also gave her a copy of the modern English New Testament, Good News For Modern Man. The truth took hold in Annie's life a few weeks later and she quit the musical group she was singing in, surrendering her life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. "All I know is that I love Jesus, and Jesus loves me," was Annie's first public testimony. Simple words of a brand new faith.Buck and Annie were married in early 1969 and the Lord began to teach them much about serving Him. An old upright piano became a schoolroom for Annie as the Lord began to teach her to play and receive songs from Him, while Buck was learning to be a recording studio engineer. The next major event leading to the birth of The 2nd Chapter of Acts was the death of Annie's father, Walter, from leukemia in the late summer of 1970, just two years after Elizabeth's death.Following their father's funeral, it was decided that Nelly, 14, and Matthew, 12, now orphaned, would go to live with Buck and Annie. The Herrings had been married for less than a year and a half when the teens moved into their home. The trauma of losing both of their parents and becoming part of a new and different family situation took its toll on the two younger siblings. Nelly quickly credits "the grace of God and the lubricating oil of the Holy Spirit" as the secret to surviving the frequent family frictions. The love of the Lord became more and more real in the midst of the new relationships, eventually bringing Nelly and Matthew to their own commitment to Jesus.Annie continued to receive songs at her piano, but now Nelly and Matthew would join her after school in spontaneous musical expression that began to solidify them musically and spiritually. Their voices blended together in smooth harmonies, so tightly, and naturally. "We were just singing to the Lord," says Matthew, "and it was a way of releasing our pain. We had gone through something tragic, but we knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel."Friends who heard them sing began to tell their friends and soon there were requests to sing at churches, Christian coffeehouses, and such. But that was the limit. "The last thing we wanted to do was to sing in front of people," " We were just so nervous" explains Annie. "The good part was that it forced us to rely on the Lord."
The first recording was not intended to be a "group" record, but a song written by a friend of Buck's who wanted to record it. Instead, Matthew was selected to be the singer and belted out the vocal to a song called "Jesus Is" on his 13th birthday with his sisters and some friends singing the background parts. The song caught the ear of Pat Boone who arranged a contract with MGM records, and The 2nd Chapter of Acts was born. Several concerts into their first tour, someone approached Annie and said, "We're really sorry we didn't applaud, but we've never heard music like that before!" As Nelly reflects: "One of the reasons people didn't applaud was because we weren't singing songs about Jesus, we were singing to Him. When people recognized that, they sensed His Spirit. They could see Jesus, and they fell in love with Him."Besides the spiritual power of their music, other factors catapulted "Acts" into the public spotlight. First, touring with ‘New Christy Minstrel', Barry McGuire exposed them to a built-in audience each concert. Second, "Easter Song" was getting airplay on secular radio stations as well as the few contemporary Christian programs that existed.
REVIEW FOR THE ALBUM(How the West Was One)
This is the second of three live recordings 2nd Chapter of Acts did. The first was a two album set with Barry McGuire taking 2/3 of the concert. The third was with Michael and Stormie Omartian, with 2nd Chapter having 2/3 of the concert. This one has 2nd Chapter of Acts and Phil Keaggy splitting it 50/50. 2nd Chapter opens up with the first four songs. For those who don't know, Phil Keaggy played guitar on the second studio project of 2nd Chapter of Acts. Phil's solo on "Hey Whatcha Say" is awesome. Phil then does the middle portion, with 2nd Chapter of Acts coming back and finishing the project. When this was recorded, both groups had two albums out. Phil did "Another Try" from his third album (a version different and better than the studio version), and Annie Herring did a pair of songs from her first solo album ("Dance With You" and "Grinding Stone"). Original songs to this project included Phil Keaggy's "My Life", the Matthew Ward solo "Psalm 61", and Annie's solo "Receive".Guitar and vocals are superb and timeless. Great trip down memory lane! This is one of the best concert packages ever. Excitement, warmth, power -- it's all here. Keaggy and A Band Called David get progressive on "Rejoice" and even on "Time." The best rendition of "Love Broke Thru" and Matthew Ward at his finest!(Although I've been a Keaggy fan for years, this was my first introduction to 2nd Chapter of Acts and "a band called David". I was unprepared! Not only does 2CoA shine with tight harmonies and creativity, but their backup singing adds more power to Phil's "What a Day", making this live version far superior to the studio recording. "Hey Whatcha Say" is a great opener, too, despite the dated (but not overly-glossed) disco bassline. In addition to all this, the band is TIGHT, and the concert recording is one of the best I've heard in ANY decade! One musical footnote: There are very few groups (at least in the mainstream) that have relevant lyrics anymore. In fact, it seems to me that ANY band can be called a "Christian group" as long as they don't have offensive lyrics. Since Petra disbanded and Christafari got watered-down, there don't seem to be many performers brave enough to say "Jesus is Lord" anymore! REVIEW FOR THE ALBUM(Singer Sower)
This album was my first exposure to 2nd Chapter of Acts. Now when "Room Noise" came on and I heard the Japanese and drum beats, I was caught off gaurd, but the more I listened to the album the more the words started to make sense and I really got into the other-wordly harmony of the sibling trio. I love the message of "Taking the Easy Way" and the Queen influenced sound of the apocalyptic "No One Will Have a Secret". And if "Lift Me Up" Matthew Ward's solo on the thoughts of Christ as he is being crucified, doesn't touch you than nothing will. This album is not for everybody, but if you like 2nd Chapter of Acts or just christian music with a different sound, I would recommend getting this Album.Comprised of Annie Herring Nelly Greisen and Matthew Ward the sibling vocal trio known as 2nd Chapter of Acts was one of the Jesus movement’s greatest treasures - the very rare example of a group with a completely unique sound and the native talent to outshine all secular competitors. REVIEW FOR THE ALBUM(Nightlight)
If you like contemporary Christian music and if the main thing you're looking for is that the singers sincerely and genuinely want to glorify God, then you'll like anything 2nd Chapter of Acts does. This was One Of my favorite album by them at one time, but I can't pick a favorite from them. I love all they've done and hope the Lord will lead them to get back together to make a few more albums. Many of us miss them although Annie and Matthew do solo stuff. If you like C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," then you must get 2nd Chapter's "The Roar of Love." It Should have been the soundtrack for the latest movie. This was an unfortunate oversight on the part of the director and producer.at the end of their group-recording and touring days). When Buck Herring (the group's producer and husband of principal writer and group member Annie Herring) was mentioning their other projects, he mentioned "Night Light", and said he had feedback that this project had a special anointing. (They also did "That's Not Nice To Say" from this project.)
REVIEW FOR THE ALBUM(Far Away Places)
This is an incredible CD with wonderful Christian Contempory music that was recorded back in the 1980's by a group called, The 2nd Chapter of Acts. Most of the songs were written by Annie and they are song by her, her brother Matthew and her sister Nellie. Their story is a wonderful example of how God can take the most unlikely people and use them to His glory. Once you hear these songs, you will be come hooked on their most distinct soung..This was the final 2nd Chapter of Acts album not counting their two hymns collections. It wasn't their best, but there were still several good songs on the project. "It's No Masquerade" is a haunting song. Other ones I liked were "Humble Yourself", "Sing Over Me", "A Tender Heart", "I Reach Out", "Fallin' In On You", "Take It To All The World" and "Faraway Places".
REVIEW FOR THE ALBUM(Rejoice)
This is My Very Favorite 2nd Chapter of Acts CD. The songs range from worship ("Bread of Life", "I've Got a Break in my Heart", "He's My Source") to pop-rock ("Here I Go", "Rise Up and Take a Bow", "Don't Understand It"). But don't worry: none of it's TOO hard, especially by today's standards. If you like the music of Queen or Abba, you will probably like it as much as I do. Don't be fooled by the bouncy little "pop" intro of "Will You Remember Me": it has one of the VERY best electric guitar solos I've ever heard by ANYONE, Christian OR secular. One of my favorite songs, "Nobody Can Take My Life", has a nice driving beat, but needs a little something: maybe some electric guitar, tastefully done, of course. Ironically, my LEAST favorite song is the title song, "Rejoice"; too repetitive, I guess. Overall, the voices of these two sisters and brother are easy on the ears... nice harmony, nice variety of songs. Could use a little more electric guitar, but worthy to be on my Top 10 List.I've heard 2nd Chapter Of Acts do some songs from this project two years before it was released. This album was worth the wait. One change in their music: instead of Phil Keaggy playing the lead guitar, Kerry Livgern of Kansas, a recent convert to Christianity at that point, took over the lead guitars. My favorite songs from the project include "Bread Of Life", "Nobody Can Take My Life Away From Me", "Can't Understand It", "Heaven Came To Earth", "Will You Remember Me?", and "Mountain Tops". "Bread Of Life", "Heaven Came To Earth", and "Mountain Tops" belonged on the greatest hit collection, as did "Rejoice" and "I've Got A Break In My Heart(http://www.holymetalrob.com)
