After 10 years as frontman for Petra, John ventured forth with his first solo album, "SHAKE," in 1995. Amidst rumors of his leaving Petra, it was made perfectly clear that John not only would remain with Petra, but that he was fully capable of pursuing a solo career simultaneously – a feat no other lead singer in the Christian industry had ever attempted. John not only made the attempt - but he excelled at it.Following closely on the heels of "SHAKE," "UNFIT FOR SWINE" made its debut in 1996. A very diverse album musically, "SWINE" showcases John’s versatility as a vocalist, with elements of alternative and modern rock in a surprising blend that rages with intensity and drive. Now, after more than 10 years, John is back with his third solo album, "THE GRAFTING," released in 2008. "THE GRAFTING" has elements of his rock roots, but concentrates as much on the lyrical content as the music, covering mature-themed topics such as adoption, divorce, third world children, and other issues in today’s adult world.
REVIEWS FOR THE ALBUM SHAKE:
If I could sum up what this album is in one word, it would be WOW! Amazingly, I just recently bought this album for the first time but I've always wanted it. I was a little leary, as I own "Unfit for Swine", And I was Not disappointed with that album. In my opinion, *that* album had Very good songs on it. I listen to it much. But "Shake" is soooooo much better! It's actually weird to think that "Shake" came before "Unfit for Swine", since the two are so different musically. Every single song on this album is "turn it up" quality. The ballads are beautiful, and the rock songs ROCK! My favorites are "Wake the Dead", "Don't Look Back", "Carry the Burden", "Inside of You", and "The Hard Way". Even though this album is almost ten years old, it is hardly outdated, and I strongly recommend it if you happen to find a copy of it.There is a very narrow scope of music that I like - Christian Album Rock/Arena Rock. Petra in the John Schlitt era and David and the Giants are about the only dependable bands to put out songs that guarantee I will be able to listen to them. The singer from David and the Giants put out a solo CD which I did not like - gave away. John Schlitt did a solo Cd and then another - SHAKE. I must say these 2 CD's are as good AND BETTER (if that were possible) as any of the Petra CD's. And from what I previously said about my narrow taste and love of Petra this is quite a recommendation for SHAKE and the other, Unfit for Swine. Shake is an awesome CD that will get years of play in my house. Killer CD's! Next best is possbly Petra-Revival , .I am a die-hard Petra fan, both with John and with Greg X. Voltz. SHAKE becomes more and more timely as the years go by.Their messages are powerful and the guitar rifts are excellent. As a matter of fact, all the lyrics and music on this cd are powerful. Now I have to find Mr.Schlitt's 2nd solo effort. Another gem I'm sure. John breaks out of the commercial rock of Petra and goes all out on this solo project. If you have a hard time finding hard rock that is Christian, you need look no further. Impressive solos by Dan Huff highlight songs such as Can't Get Away, "Save Me" , And "I Killed A Man." dc Talk's Toby McKeehan also helped write "Can't Get Away", the best song on the album. If you're a Petra fan this is better than any of their previous stuff.About Grafting Album. The Grafting could be considered a softer rock album than Schlitt’s first two solo endeavors, but his signature vocals still bring the rock feel home. Less than a handful of the cuts could really be called worship songs, like “Lord Have Mercy” and “Carry On”, which is a nice cut to end the project. But even the rockier numbers have an attitude of worship, like “Face of God” with the lyrics: “Do you hear what heaven hears? Do you know it in your heart? Do you share the pain and cry the tears, but don’t know where to start?”The title cut takes you back to the Glen Campbell country days, smooth and easy -- a nice departure for Schlitt. He really puts his heart into this one, as he explains: “It’s a very personal song to me, because I have two grandsons that are adopted by my oldest child and her husband. And on a much greater scale - we are adopted children of God ONLY because He loved us so much that He grafted us into His family because of our faith in His Son, Jesus. In both scenarios my grandchildren and myself, and all believers, were made part of a family because of the actions of someone else - it was nothing we did to accomplish this.”“Gravity” uses the most electricity, and John’s vocals are truly rocker quality. But it’s the closest you’ll get on this cd to rock and roll. Contrast that with “Your Eyes”, a piano driven ballad about how God will someday wipe every tear from our eyes, and you’ve got a melting pot of top quality, contemporary music. The Grafting reveals John Schlitt’s tender side, but John Schlitt the rock star can’t help but slip out from time to time(http://www.holymetalrob.com/)
